So, tonight was the night that I was preparing for all week. It was the Southwest Minnesota State University Student Association Meeting. I will have to say I was a little nervous. I was supposed to chair the meeting. There is so much to know about parlimentary procedure, and I could only assume that my meager knowledge of Robert’s Rules could be stretched to their limit tonight.
The meeting was to begin at 6:15 pm. As 6:15 came on my cell phone (yes I know, college students and their modern time pieces!), I nervously thought of how to begin a meeting. I actually almost waited to 6:16 because I was going through the proper parlimentary procedure in my head before beginning. Then, with a couple taps of my gavel, the meeting was called to order!
There were several times throughout the meeting that I was thankful for long reports (Such as the one given by our MSUSA campus organizer). It gave me a chance to gather my thoughts about how I was to chair the meeting. I will say that it got easier after the first half of the meeting. One thing that I appreciate is that I already knew most of the people in the room. They are my friends. So that gave me comfort. When I made slight grammatical errors in my speaking I saw a couple vetran senators laugh a little. I said “Is there any questions?” As some know, this was a classic gramatical error that they never stopped teasing our former vice president about. Well anyway, I tried extra hard to say “Are there any questions” after that!
In the end, I felt much more confident about chairing the meetings. It is nice to know that I can always count on the other members of my exec board to assist me when needed. I think senate is going to be great this year, and I hope it will!
P.S. Please pray for my mother-in-law, Joanne Myrvik. She was taken to the hospital by ambulence today due to some dizziness. They still have not diagnosed the cause of the problem. Hopefully we will find out in the morning.
